Frequently Asked Questions

Standard shipping to Ancestry and $200 of shipping protection are included in the service. We currently ship to all 50 U.S. states. Note that return shipping is not included and will be billed in the quote you receive.
Yes, a tracking number is provided with every shipment, and you will receive emails about the status of your order throughout the process. If you'd like real-time tracking, feel free to add an Apple AirTag^® or similar device in the box, and we will ship it back to you.

- NOTE: Digitization and return shipping is not included in the purchase of the kit. You will receive a quote for digitization and return shipping after you send in your AncestryPreserve kit and we've inventoried your items.
You can send as many items as you can safely pack in our kit. Here are some examples of what you could fit if you sent only 1 type of media:
- 30 VHS tapes
- 200 MiniDV Tapes
- 150 50ft Film Reels
- 1,500 4x6 prints
- 10,000 Negatives
- 3 Slide carousels

Fill the kit however you like. You can leave items in their original cases, carousels, sleeves, and scrapbooks, or choose to remove them and place them in bags.

Note: We use the labels on your physical media to name your digital albums. For example, if a bag of photos is labeled “Wedding Photos” we will create an album in your gallery called “Wedding Photos.” More information on this process can be found here.
If you have more items than fit in the box, we recommend purchasing an additional kit.
It’s not uncommon for a tape to be blank, a reel or negative to be damaged, or for customers to send in items that we’re unable to digitize. We do our best to convert your media and will return all items sent, including any that we couldn’t process. With this in mind, we are unable to provide refunds if we are unable to digitize your media.

At this time, we only scan the front sides of photos. Any additional details can be added by you when you view your digitized media in your gallery.
While we digitize your media in the order it was placed in the bag, the files may not appear in that same order when uploaded to your account. You can change the order in which your items appear once they’re digitized.
All digitized items are uploaded to the Ancestry account of the person who purchased the kit. You can also download them to your device.
Ancestry offers free minor repairs for damaged videotapes, such as replacing housings or splicing broken tape. Technicians also work to fix tracking issues (lines or jittering on screen).
When you are reviewing your digitization quote, you can purchase AI enhancements to give your home movies and photos stunning quality and improved clarity. We're unable to improve some media to its original quality, like items that are damaged, faded, or discolored.
Once we receive your items, you'll get an email within 7 days to review your quote for digitization and return shipping. After payment, we’ll begin processing your order, and within a few weeks, your digitized media will begin to show up in your Ancestry account.
